Inkwren helps you manage every aspect of the publishing process, from tracking story submissions through a customizable editorial workflow, to managing publication schedules, rights, and royalty splits. Whether you’re running a magazine, managing multiple imprints, or publishing your own work, Inkwren provides the structure and tools you need.

Key Concepts

Organizations & Workspaces

Inkwren uses a hierarchical structure to organize your work:

  • Organization: Your top-level entity (e.g., "Blackbird Publishing")
  • Workspaces: Individual imprints, magazines, or projects within your organization (e.g., "Borogrove Press", "Literary Magazine Q1 2025")

This structure allows you to keep different projects separate while maintaining centralized team management and billing at the organization level.

Stories

Stories are the core content unit in Inkwren. Each story can have:

  • Multiple pen names and author credits
  • Custom metadata (word count, genre, tags)
  • Submission history across multiple publications
  • Rights tracking
  • Cross-workspace linking for stories that appear in multiple publications

Submissions

Track every submission through a customizable 9-stage workflow:

  1. Submitted - Initial submission received
  2. Under Review - Being reviewed by editors
  3. Accepted - Approved for publication
  4. Revisions - Author making changes
  5. Scheduled - Assigned to a publication date
  6. Published - Live and available
  7. Rejected - Not accepted
  8. Withdrawn - Author requested withdrawal
  9. Hold - Paused for future consideration

Publications

Publications are your output: magazines, anthologies, novels, or collections. Each publication can have:

  • Multiple editions (e.g., hardcover, paperback, ebook)
